USTA Committee Headed by HTA President Paul Fontaine Calls for Research on and Testing for Exotic Drugs

COLUMBUS, Ohio (June 28, 2012) – At the most recent United States Trotting Association (USTA) annual meeting in February, USTA President Phil Langley appointed a committee of horsemen and track operators to study drug testing and to investigate what the industry can do to improve testing procedures, including providing more financial support.

Paul Fontaine, president of Harness Tracks of America (HTA), agreed to head that committee and has already held several meetings.

HTA Backs Fair But Strict Enforcement of Racing’s Rules

Paul Fontaine, president of Harness Tracks of America, today released the following statement outlining the association’s position with respect to recent events in racing involving alleged medication violations and enforcement of racing regulations:

In light of highly publicized recent events in horse racing and with continuing dedication to the importance of personal and professional integrity in the harness racing industry, Harness Tracks of America, an association of the finest harness racetracks in North America, endorses and reaffirms its position that the rules of racing in each jurisdiction should be enforced to their maximum effect and in a fair, thorough and balanced manner.

MAJOR STANDARDBRED RACING ORGANIZATIONS TO GATHER FOR 2013 HARNESS RACING CONGRESS IN FORT LAUDERDALE, FLORIDA.

Four major, national and international Standardbred racing organizations – Harness Horsemen International (HHI), Harness Tracks of America (HTA), United States Harness Writers’ Association (USHWA) and United States Trotting Association (USTA) – have announced that they will participate in the 2013 Harness Racing Congress to be held from Feb. 28 through March 4 in Fort Lauderdale, Fla. at the Westin Beach Resort & Spa.
